Sabrina Carpenter dropped her 7th studio album in late August this year, only a year after her album Short n´ Sweet. Man´s Best Friend is Sabrina's second number 1 debut album, topping her record breaking debut of her previous album. When it was first announced in late June, the cover caused quite a stir. It shows Carpenter on her knees while a hand holds her hair. Many criticized her for this sultry cover, but in a showcase of her true personality she dropped a variant cover saying it is ¨Approved by God¨. The album is 12 songs, 2 music videos, 38 minutes and 24 seconds of pure genius lyricism, laughter and tears.

Manchild:

The single released in early June was Sabrina´s first #1 single debut on the Billboard Hot 100. The upbeat and subtle country tone of the song was perfect for the start of summer. The song calls out all the irresponsible boys in Carpenter's teasing style as she sings, “Stupid. Or is it slow? Maybe it's useless? But there's a cuter word for it, I know. Man-child.” She also added tons of hidden innuendos throughout the song like “Did you just say you're finished? Didn't know we started.” The song also explores how she was often the man in the relationship while her partner was immature emotionally, financially and developmentally.

Tears:

To my naive surprise this track is not about crying. This upbeat song features heavy, easily heard and concealed sexual references. She talks about how low her standards and expectations for men are, saying that she isn't really asking for much from a man. My favorite example of this is “A little initiative can go a very long long way, Baby just do the dishes, I'll give you what you, what you, what you want.” The music video featuring Colman Domingo follows them through a bizarre house party inspired by the movie The Rocky Horror Picture Show, following her trend of music videos inspired by movies.

My Man On Willpower:

This catchy song has some extremely deep symbolism and meaning behind the happy tone. She tells us about how someone who was deeply in love and obsessed with her now barely likes her. She sings, “He used to be literally obsessed with me, I'm suddenly the least sought after girl in the land.” I think she made the messaging and vibe of the song so different because what I´ve learned about Sabrina over her career is that she wants you to feel emotions, but still be able to laugh. Which I think is one of the main reasons why the track comes off as two sided.

Sugar Talking:

The first sad sounding song of the album explores how her partner would make a lot of promises, but never act upon them. She tells him to “Put your loving where your mouth is, your sugar talking isn't working tonight”, showing how she´s tired of his constant hot and cold attitude, and contradictory actions. Her vocal skills are also showcased in this song with the ballad and heartfelt theme of the track fitting her voice beautifully.

We Almost Broke Up Again Last Night:

The saddest song on the album for me is about Sabrina's ups and downs with her partner. The slow guitar of the song makes me cry and you can hear the sad longing and pain in her voice. They both care for each other but neither of them want to change or admit they aren't right for one another. The best line that really hits is “All the ‘I love you's’ and ‘I'm sorry's’ were said” which brings the whole song and message together.

Nobody´s Son:

This track expresses her complicated relationship with men and how a former partner tarnished it further. She uses her signature upbeat voice while revealing very personal feelings. She sings, “Here we go again, Crying in bed, What a familiar feeling” showing how many times men have made her cry. I found the messaging similar to Manchild in the way that she's calling out the immaturity of guys.

Never Getting Laid:

I think this song is the second part of her single Please Please Please. It was a warning to her boyfriend to not do anything that would warrant ill feelings toward him.  She now shares how she hopes his life doesn´t turn out well, saying, “Baby I'm not angry, I love you just the same, I just hope you get agoraphobia some day.” The sad tone with the occasional happiness of the song really carries that message of she still likes him but that's presented with some resentment.

When Did You Get Hot?:

This is one of my favorite songs on the album, the fun back track, her stunning vocals and lyrics just layer in such a great way. She talks about being introduced to someone she used to know that she remembers being rather unattractive, becoming very good looking: “My friends walk in your friend’s direction, Said Sabrina, don't you know Devin? And I was like, Huh, When did you get hot?” She jokes about how she wants to spend the night with him while making constant comparisons to his previous appearance.

Go Go Juice:

This song clearly keeps in mind what it's like to be drunk and having a fun time. She teases us about drunk dialing her exes: “Could be John or Larry, Gosh, who's to say? Or the one that rhymes with villain If I'm feeling that way.” She references 4 of her former partners by rhyming their names Shawn Mendes(John), Barry Keoghan(Larry), Joshua Basset(Gosh), Dylan O'Brien(Villain) showing her playful and lyrical genius. The song just feels like a fun time at the bar with your friends.

Don´t Worry I´ll Make You Worry:

The last sad toned song of the album really showcases Sabrina's emotional intelligence. She shows an insight into her mind during an unpredictable on and off relationship. The lyrics all play at manipulation and how she has this playful dominance over him. A favorite of mine is “And I'll never call you right back, But when I do, I'm making you laugh” just because of how fun and teasing the line is.

House Tour:

This song shows what a lyrical genius Sabrina Carpenter is. The entire song is jam-packed with jokes, innuendos, and great story telling. True to its name, it takes us through a house tour Sabrina is giving someone after a successful date. The whole track is just a massive metaphor which instead of a house all lyrics suggest she's talking about herself. “Do you want the house tour? I could take you to the first, second, third floor, And I promise none of this is a metaphor, I just want you to come inside. But never enter through the back door” is probably my favorite lyric just because it just feels so Sabrina coded.

Goodbye:

The perfect ending to an amazing album this tune talks about how someone who broke up with Sabrina wants her back. The beginning is very misleading as it has a sad tone, but it quickly switches to a happy catchy beat. Confronting the breakup making it clear she is over him, even bidding him goodbye in 5 different languages and even more cultures. “Goodbye, Means that you're losing me for life, Can't call it love then call it quits” this line just shows how done she is with him.

As a Carpenter myself I in no way claim to be unbiased but this album was truly amazing vocally, lyrically, and as a whole. The marketing of this album is perfect and fit with Sabrina's brand so well. She showed why she's a two time Grammy winner and I can´t wait to see what award season brings this album. The song scored an overall average of 8.5 and I truly suggest you give it a listen, it can be found wherever you listen to music.
